Free yourselves from the bondage of Redmond!

No, this has nothing to do with naughty sex with loggers from the Pacific Northwest. This is all about people who (like me) have made the switch from Windows to Linux. Go them! Click the link below (the one that says “read more”) to see their stories.
The news isn’t all good though. Not all of these people really made the switch smoothly. Must just asked various people (usually the wrong ones) for advice on how to set it up and what distribution to use. One cat wound up in Linspire hell, poor bastard.
Bottom line here is that if you want to try Linux, you should follow these basic steps:

1) Take inventory of your hardware. Check distribution websites to see which ones support your hardware.
2) Get live CDs for the ones that will work with the stuff in yo box. Download and burn them.
3) Try as many distros as possible. Nearly every distro has a live CD now, so you get the chance to check them out. Also, mess with both KDE and Gnome to see which one you like better.
4) Ask lots of questions before installing. If necessary, I can help you out. I’ve done installs with a few different distros (including the very user friendly ones like Mandriva, Suse and Ubuntu), and I’m always willing to help my friends, especially if it’s help on the road to becoming MS-free.
5) ?????
6) Profit!

Well, maybe not 5 and 6, but if you follow these simple steps, you might have better luck than some of these people.
Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in line as the penguins march!
